NFC Login for Windows: Use Your NFC Card or NFC Enabled Mobile Device

The Power of NFC-Based Multi-Factor Authentication

Logging into Windows using NFC Card or NFC-enabled mobile devices is a game-changer in the realm of security. With the CodeB Credential Provider, users can leverage the power of Multi-Factor Authentication for Windows Logon, RDP sessions, and even for authenticating to remote shares. NFC cards or mobile devices are tangible, personal items that are less likely to be compromised compared to easily guessable or hackable passwords. Moreover, industries handling sensitive data, especially those under GDPR regulations, are now legally mandated to adopt two-factor authentication (2FA) for Windows. By integrating NFC-based logins, businesses can ensure compliance, reduce the risk of data breaches, and offer a seamless login experience to their users. In essence, it's a blend of heightened security with unmatched user convenience.

NFC / RFID Cards

NFC (Near Field Communication) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) cards are cutting-edge technologies that enable wireless communication between devices when brought into close proximity. These cards store data that can be read by specialized readers, making them ideal for secure authentication purposes. For Windows 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication), NFC/RFID cards act as a physical token, adding an extra layer of security beyond just a password. This means that even if a malicious actor obtains a user's password, they would still need the physical NFC/RFID card to gain access, making unauthorized access significantly more challenging. In an era where cyber threats are constantly evolving, integrating NFC/RFID cards for 2FA in Windows ensures that sensitive data and systems remain protected, marrying convenience with robust security.

Mobile Phone NFC

NFC technology in mobile phones has revolutionized the way we interact with devices and systems. Beyond just enabling contactless payments or data sharing, mobile phones equipped with NFC can simulate or emulate NFC/RFID cards. This capability effectively renders traditional plastic cards obsolete, as one's phone can now serve the same purpose without the need for a separate physical card. The "CodeB Authenticator" app harnesses this advancement by incorporating a built-in NFC/RFID feature. With the "CodeB Authenticator" installed, any mobile device transforms into a versatile authentication tool, capable of replacing and even outperforming traditional plastic cards. This not only promotes sustainability by reducing the need for plastic but also offers users a more convenient and integrated authentication experience.

Access Windows Using NFC Card or NFC-Capable Mobile Device

Install CodeB Authenticator

For Windows logon, a compatible NFC Card like MIFARE or DESFIRE is required. We also accommodate various student cards, bus tickets, credit cards, physical access cards, hotel cards, and more.

If you lack a supported contactless card, simply download the "CodeB Authenticator" on your mobile device as this app converts your mobile into a NFC Token.

Register CodeB Credential Provider

The "CodeB Credential Provider" is available in two distinct editions:

The System Tray Stand-alone Application and the Comprehensive Suite of Tools and Applications. For this demonstration, we'll be utilizing the System Tray Stand-alone Application. You can download it by clicking the button below.

Please be aware that, for the very first start of the system tray application, you must run it with elevated administrator rights to ensure proper installation and registration of the credential provider.

After starting, right-click on the system tray icon and navigate to "Credential Provider" -> "NFC Credentials".

Link Account to NFC Token

Make sure your NFC Card or mobile device with the "CodeB Authenticator" app started is close to a CCID-compliant contactless smartcard reader. If the reader doesn't immediately recognize the card's serial number, adjust the card's position and try again.

After it's detected, enter your Username/Domain (if needed), password, and set a Logon PIN. Finally, click on "Link Card" to complete the process.

Transitioning between Credential Providers

During Windows login, users can effortlessly toggle between the standard Windows credential provider and the CodeB Credential Provider.

A noteworthy mention is the capability to mask the default Windows Credential Provider using the CodeB Credential Provider Filter, a subject meriting its own detailed exploration.

Kindly be aware that if your token is linked to the system's default PIN (set in the registry with a default value of 0000), a simple tap with your NFC token will initiate the logon process.
